Self & Object Lines
The Self Line represents the diviner (or the party issuing the question), while the Object Line represents the specific subject, event, or the opposing party. This forms a basic Yin-Yang interaction framework in a reading.
What is Self & Object Lines?
In the Jingfang structural system, every 6-line hexagram has two fixed coordinates: The Self Line (Shi Yao) and the Object Line (Ying Yao). They are separated by two lines in the hexagram. Whether the question concerns marriage, business negotiations, or conflict, you are mapped to the "Self Line", and the partner, client, or opponent is mapped to the "Object Line".
Interpretation & Usage
Analyzing the Self/Object interaction is a first step in many readings. A favorable negotiation hexagram often shows the Object Line generating the Self Line (the opposing party channeling benefits to you). A difficult reading may show the Object Line attacking the Self Line (hostile pressure) or the Self Line falling into the "Void" (self-sabotage, hesitation, or lack of foundation).
Frequently Asked Questions
Q.If the Self Line produces the Object Line, does it mean I am losing out?
Not necessarily "losing"; it usually indicates that you are expending energy toward the other side. If asking about a crush, it may show you pursuing them actively. If asking about B2B sales, it may show you conceding margins to win the client. Whether it yields a return depends on the underlying energy levels of the lines.
