Advancing & Retreating Spirits

Advancing and Retreating describe prescribed changes within an element. Traditional interpretation uses them for continuation or expansion versus contraction or withdrawal. The fixed branch pairs come first: not every forward-looking sequence is Advancing, nor every apparently weaker transformed line Retreating.

Advancing pairs are Hai→Zi, Yin→Mao, Si→Wu, Shen→You, Chou→Chen, Chen→Wei, Wei→Xu and Xu→Chou; reverse them for retreating. Yin wood to Mao wood advances, and Mao to Yin retreats. Compare the original and transformed Najia branches of one moving line.

Identify a moving line before checking its transformed branch; a static line has no advancing or retreating transformation. Then identify its focus-relative role. Supporting and Hostile lines may both advance, but their relationships to the focus differ. Strength, void and break conditions are checked next.

With fire as focus, moving Yin-wood Support changing to Mao first satisfies the advancing pair; then assess whether its support of fire remains effective. With earth as focus, the same wood is Hostile, so advancement concerns the controlling force instead. Mao→Yin reverses the direction.

Void or Month Break in the changed line adds an effectiveness question. A complete reading records pair, role and calendar state—for example, advancing Support with a temporarily void transformed branch—rather than equating advancement with success.
